Cry of the Falcon The Cry of the Falcon refers to the Germanic Goddess Freya, who had a cloak of feathers that gave her the ability to change into a falcon. As a falcon Freya could make her way among people. Weeping and screaming, she searched for her lost husband Odur. Power and justice are the main ideas portrayed by Kevin Houben in this lyrical concert work.

A Viking's Tale A Viking’s Tale tells the story of Gelmel, the watchman of a Northern king. It is a suite distilled from Kevin Houben’s large musical spectacle Gelmel, containing the most beautiful themes and interesting passages. As in all legends and fairytales, various elements including war, love, princesses and fortresses occur. Beautifully orchestrated for a medium sized band. Let the tale begin!

Abaddon Abaddon was commissioned by the NLBB (Noord-Limburgse Brassband - North Limburg Brass Band) from Belgium. Abaddon is the demon reigning over the underworld. In the New Testament - in the Book of Revelation by John (9:11) - he is called the angel of the bottomless pit.
The work Abaddon lives up to its name. Technically and physically, it holds an enormous challenge for every band in the champions division. The composition has a traditional form structure (fast-slow-fast), and it consists of ornamentations around the letters IVAN, after Ivan Meylemans, the conductor who since 2001 has obtained great successes with the NLBB, and who in this case has also been essential in taming the demon in Abaddon.

Lake of the Moon The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms and occasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake, which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. Bring a little bit of South American history to your concert with Lake of the Moon.

Atropos Atropos is one of the three goddesses of fate. She cuts the thread of life of a person whenever their time has come. The composition is film-like and presents challenges in sound, balance and rhythm. The work opens in a quiet mood in which the themes are presented before finally all the elements are combined and we are led to a sparkling apotheosis that is demanding in its melodic phrasing and requires stamina from the musicians.

Codon “Codon” is a term used in the field of molecular genetics to describe the interaction between the three elements that are important for both the creation and the preservation of life. Kevin Houben uses this term as a metaphor for the interaction between the conductor, the musicians and the committee of a concert band. They all have the same goal, to preserve the life of the band. This work consists of three movements, symbolising birth, life and death - either of a human being or a band. From the foundation of a band over good and bad times up to the optimistic future, this work will appeal to the soul of every band member in the world!

Broken Sword Broken Sword is based upon the legend of King Edward the Confessor’s Broken Sword - the sword with the tip broken off by an angel. This challenging composition begins slowly, with stirring harmony. The subsequent passages echo the power of the sword; the quiet middle movement mirrors the benevolence of its carrier.

Orbis The word “orbis” means an orbit or a path, and in this case represents the direction of three wind ensembles as they join together. A triumphant opening to Orbis alludes to the history of these three ensembles, before a heroic theme is played that symbolises their strong future. The middle section is based on a charming melody that represents the three individual ensembles growing together. Orbis is a piece that musicians, as individuals and as a group, can identify with!

Thyellene Thyellene depicts of a battle that took place on the ‘Tielenheide’ - a stretch of moorland near the Belgian village of Tielen in 1597. In that memorable battle Prince Maurice of Nassau, commander of the Dutch army, defeated Count Varax, a general of the Spanish army - with a considerably smaller troop than the enemy. This great heroic subject has been transformed into this equally great work for brass band, which won the third prize at the 2009 European Composers Competition.

Dogon Dogon whisks the audience off on a journey to the steep slopes of the Dogon Valley. Majestic brass sounds sketch the exotic culture of the Malian Dogon people. The Dogon see the valley as both a threat and a promise for the future. This is represented in dark and mysterious chords. Now three soloists (horn, trumpet and soprano saxophone) bring the work to a dazzling conclusion, reminiscent of the colourful masked dances of the Dogon.

Broken Sword The Broken Sword is one of the five ceremonial swords kept in the Tower of London and is used during the coronation of a new king or queen. Legend has it that an angel broke off the tip of the sword in an effort to prevent an unjust killing. Composer Kevin Houben lets his music retell this intriguing legend. Broken Sword resembles a film score in many ways and will paint vivid images as the band plays its way through the legend. Many different moods create a contrast-rich work that makes for an exciting listening and playing experience every time!

Forgotten World Forgotten World pays homage to a former conductor of the orchestra that commissioned this work. It also happens to be the same orchestra that composer Kevin Houben gained some of his early experience in as a conductor. This connection ties together the alternatingly serious and up-beat passages. The main theme contains modern idioms while the jovial passages remind everyone to maintain a healthy balance between work and play.
