The Green Hill This piece was commissioned by Swiss euphonium virtuoso Erich Schmidli. Bert Appermont dug deep into Celtic music for inspiration and created a fantasy that shows off the incredible, but often overlooked, versatility of the euphonium. Charming lyrical melodies, virtuosic runs and exciting, colourful tuttis create plenty of contrast in this exciting work. The difficulty level for the soloist and band means almost any band to perform this piece and showcase their euphonium player.

Morning Star Variations This composition is based on the beautiful chorale melody Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How lovely shines the Morning Star). Like the chorale fantasias by Bach and Buxtehude, this is a fantasia in which the original theme is used and altered throughout the work in various ways. Slow passages are alternated with fast ones, and finally a grand tutti arrives in which the original chorale theme sounds joyfully in a majestic finale. For extra colour and dimension, an optional organ part has been added, that can be used when the circumstances are appropriate. On the full score, the various organ entries are indicated.

Hymn of Glory This melodic hymn begins with a lyrical melody, handled by various instrument groups. After a gradual build, a first climax is reached, in which the brass instruments give full vent to their glorious sound in jubilation. Now we hear a second theme, resounding in the euphoniums, which ushers in a moment of rest. Then the excitement gathers again, building to a great tutti. The main theme is taken up once more, sounding now as a kind of universal gratitude.

Ragnarök In Nordic mythology, Ragnarök is the downfall of the gods and of the world, which takes place as a kind of battle between giants and gods. Under the flaming sword of the god of fire, everything is laid waste - but only to make way for a new world and a new order. Bert Appermont took inspiration from this old saga for a magical, majestic concert band work that can also optionally be performed with choir.

El Cid El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar Cameador, the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening, a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni's Adagio and to the slow movement from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto d'Aranjuez. The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close, and castanets are a must! The solo part can be played by trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet or alto saxophone and is also available in a simplified version.

The Cross & The Crown This brilliant concert march was written to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of "Les Voltigeurs de Québec". The title of the work refers to the emblem of this Canadian regiment, in which both the cross and the crown are depicted. This piece aims above all to express the joy of this special anniversary. The melancholy trio section brings to mind more turbulent times and the trials and tribulations that the regiment has experienced at various points of its history.

Aurum The magnificent concert march Aurum (lat. gold) was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cunductor of the municipal band of Wolfach, in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The march begins with a light and playful theme. The following lyrical trio provides a contrast, with its nod to Edward Elgar. After a number of key changes the introductory theme returns in canon. Finally, the music heads to a majestic finale, in which the trio theme is played as a splendid baroque chorale.

Fanfare For A Friend Fanfare for a Friend was originally composed as an introductory piece for the brass ensemble Musica Mosana and their conductor Mark Prils. The work begins with a brilliant brass fanfare that presents the main theme for the first time. This stately theme can be heard in counterpoints throughout the first 28 bars. This is followed by a contrasting and rapid part whereby a melodic theme can be heard against a more rhythmic accompaniment. A virtuoso and sweeping passage then leads to the grandioso in which both themes are played simultaneously in a grand finale.

The Big Bang One very tiny "pop" in space resulted in one very big bang that created a vast amount of energy from which life eventually sprang. The Big Bang also starts with that, a big bang! The music then begins its journey through timbre and tone colours, starts developing melodies, complementing rhythms, and interesting chords that all represent the creation of something new. Strong dissonances hint at the turmoil that existed, while moments of beauty signify balance arriving at various parts of the universe. These contrasting events create a very engaging and exciting musical montage of The Big Bang and what happened next.

Song for Sakiko Bert Appermont composed Song for Sakiko during a stay in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Tokyo. "Sakiko" roughly translated means "flower child" and is associated with a dreamy, poetic atmosphere. Appermont used these associations as a starting point while composing. Song for Sakiko starts with a very lyrical theme based on a minor third that forms the basis for the entire work. A second theme builds up to the grand finale, which repeats the theme, but in a major key and the music slowly fades away, like ripples on a pond, as both themes can be heard dissipating into nothingness.

The Quest Quest implies "exploring" or "being in search of". This four piece work is a challenge to every fanfare or symphonic wind band. All groups in the orchestra have explicit parts in this composition that is reminiscent of film music. It can serve both for a concert and a contest.

Rubicon The Rubicon is a river in Northern Italy which Julius Caesar crossed with his army in 49 BC in defiance of the leaders of Rome, who feared his power. A civil war against rival Pompey ensued, which culminated in Caesar seizing power as the absolute ruler of Rome. The phrase "crossing the Rubicon" therefore refers to any person committing himself irrevocably to a risky, decisive and irrevocable of course of action. The work consists of three parts that deal with this important moment in history. Part 1 (Meditation) symbolises Caesars request to the Gods to assist him in his difficult choice. In a slow introduction we hear the melancholy and beseeching sounds of the duduk (alternatively, this part can be played by a soprano saxophone) and of the soprano solo singer over the bourdon accompaniment. The soprano solo singer then sings "dona tibi pacem" (give him rest) in a melodious and probing theme. In Part 2 (Battle of Pharsalus) trumpets and trombones resound alternately in a stately Roman fanfare, producing a stereophonic effect. This develops into a martial theme in which Caesars impressive army goes to battle against the army of rival Pompey. While the theme of Caesars army fades away, Pompeys theme emerges as a naive dance in six-eight time. His army is definitely in the majority and it believes it can easily defeat the enemy. Suddenly trumpets and trombones clash on two sides of the orchestra: Caesars army advances and attacks. A fierce battle ensues in which the two themes are played alternately as well as simultaneously. Thanks to his shrewd battle tactics, Caesar manages to win this legendary battle after all: his theme resounds ever louder in trumpets and horns until everything dies out and changes into a kind of reconciliation between the soldiers of the two armies. The melancholy "dona tibi pacem" from part 1 now serves as a reconciliation theme.Caesar is now the sole ruler of the New Roman Empire, which would be destined to leave its mark on our Western civilisation to this day. The third part is a sparkling succession of dance music (Dance) with many Greek and Roman elements in which Caesars victory is praised and celebrated. It is common knowledge that the culture (arts, gods, etc.) of the Romans drew heavily on Greek culture. I have therefore used an authentic Greek theme (the Seikolos song) several times in this part (bar 17 in the euphonium, bar 60 in the base section, bar 68 in the soprano saxophone) to suggest the music of that era and to evoke the right atmosphere. After a gradual increase in tempo in the entire orchestra, the opening melody gloriously resounds once more, surrounded by virtuoso dance music. The work ends with bombastic brass fanfares in which Caesars theme triumphs once more.NOTE FOR THE CONDUCTOR:The Armenian duduk and the monochord that are used in the introduction give a special tone to the music, but could be substituted (soprano saxophone instead of the duduk) or left out (monochord). The soprano solo is also doubled within the orchestra and could therefore also be left out if necessary, although it does provide the work with an extra dimension. The male voices in the introduction and the finale could possibly be replaced with a synthesizer with choral setting. As a visual and acoustic element in part 2, the trumpets, the e-flat cornet, the small drum and trombones can be stood up and placed at two sides of the orchestra (bar 80).Seen from the point of view of the conductor, put the trumpets, the e-flat cornet and the small drum in the left section and the trombones in the right section of the orchestra. This also helps to create a visual contrast between the two themes of the second part. The players can be seated again at bar 97 or bar 121. The soprano soloist can be placed in or in front of the orchestra, depending on what gives the best result. For the conclusion of the work the soprano solo can be sung from afar (from the wings) to create additional atmosphere. This work was composed especially for the "St Joseph" brass band from Pey/Echt (Belgium) with conductor Mark Prils.

Magnolia In the 18th century, during an expedition across the American state of Florida, the English botanist Plukenett discovered a magnolia that left a lasting impression on him. He named the plant after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. In the meantime, the popular magnolia has become one of the best-known flowering trees in the world. Nowadays it’s available in various types and colours.Just as the magnificent blooms of the magnolia appear in springtime, so this simple choral melody opens slowly and gracefully, eventually blossoming to a glorious climax. The delightful opening theme is taken up again, and eventually everything comes to rest, like a bud that closes at the day’s end.
