Four Old Dances These four dances are written in a kind of neo renaissance style. Because of the fact that little technical demands are required from its performing artists, these dances are mainly meant for beginning groups, youth ensembles and also for bands in all kinds of small strengths. Jan Van der Roost originally had pedagogical intentions with this piece.

Hymnus Antverpiae This hymn was commissioned by “Antwerpen 93”. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated “Cultural Capital of Europe” for 1993. The work-group “animatie” took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible and uncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

Brasiliana The versatility of Jan Van der Roost is displayed in this Brasiliana: a suite made up of typical Latin American dances. The movements ‘Cha-Cha-Cha’, ‘Calypso’ and ‘Samba’ are colourfully scored for wind band. The piece is of intermediate difficulty and pays special attention to Latin American percussion instruments.

Ceremonial March In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “Ceremonial March”. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances” marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.

By the River Jan Van der Roost and the commissioner of this work have strong personal ties, making By the River a very personal work for both of them. The first part is pastoral and describes the rural character of what is actually an industrial region. The next movement, a dynamic allegro that creates an exciting contrast to the first. All instruments are put to good use, letting everyone have their moment in the limelight. All the interesting thematic and melodic elements Van der Roost creates will keep the audience engaged through to the very last note!

Diptyque Diptyque is the French word for “diptych,” meaning a hinged two-part image. The first section of this two-part musical painting has an Oriental feel, with characteristic pentatonic melody lines and chords. The second section is a cheerful Saltarello dance that brings out the subtleties of the woodwind section. A juxtaposition of Eastern and Western music, Diptyque reminds listeners of the power of music in transcending all cultural, religious and political boundaries.

Arsenal Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the ‘Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal’[railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It was premiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. In the mean time, Arsenal has been recorded several times by such renowed performers like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Black Dyke BB etc.

Orion There are all sorts of marches: fast and slow, solemn and energetic, military and civil, procession and funeral. Orion is a so-called ‘slow march’. However the moderate tempo does not make a passive or heavy impression. On the contrary, this march contains natural optimism and spontaneity. The persistant ‘pulse’ gives this majestic march a noble character

Domus When composing this work the brief from the commissioning band wasfor the composer to base the work on a chorale-like subject matter andthis he has done with aplomb. In the very first bars a chorale melody ispresented and gradually the same thematic material is more extensivelyorchestrated with the melodic themes becoming more varied. With afew surprising harmonic turns the piece comes to a majestic end. Thisis a well-structured work of extreme elegance.

From Ancient Times From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly ‘ancient times’ while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!

Jubilus! Jan van der Roost’s new work Jubilus will make an ideal opening piece for any event. It is in a classical ABA form, beginning with a rising brass fanfare which is quickly replaced by a contrasting expressive lyrical theme. The two themes alternate for a few seconds until an exciting new atmosphere is created with the lively allegro. This eventful piece lets you show off many aspects of your player’s style and technique without losing overall unity
