Tracing Time Tracing Time was commissioned by the WMC Kerkrade Foundation in cooperation with the Foundation of Friends of WMC for the 2017 World Championships in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The musical material of this piece takes the form of a timeline on an imaginary mental map. This unbroken thread runs through the entire work, continually transformed through numerous sound colours and rhythms. At the same time, the piece takes the shape of a symphonic structure, based on three uninterrupted, linked movements. This work meets all standards of a high quality contest or concert work. It is challenging, spectacular, innovative and overwhelming.

Hypercube Hypercube is a musical narrative partly inspired by the architecture of the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris whose shape has been compared to a hypercube. With this landmark building as a starting point, the piece explores the poetry and reality of urban landscapes. In the course of the piece, these contrasting elements are being torn into a dramatic and virtuosic development in extended sections named "Le Vertige" (Vertigo). The Clouds theme returns later in a series of lyrical solos. In the final part of the piece, both the Vertigo and the Hypercube themes become the background for an ongoing acceleration, which conveys the impression of some sort of musical Penrose stairs. Hypercube was commissioned by the Paris Brass Band and the association ADIAM 94 in 2015.

The Raid This piece tells the story of a conflict between the communities in the valleys around Sörenberg, a village in Entlebuch in the Swiss canton of Lucerne. An old legend from the 14th century tells of an attack on Sörenberg by marauding Obwaldners who stole the local cattle. It’s full of spectacular effects and impressive rhythmical and dynamic sequences. Ideal as a contest piece.

Friendly Takeover Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale, the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover, however, is of a friendly nature, as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives, but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Thus, one gets the impression of an ongoing acceleration throughout the piece.

The Graces of Love The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of the present piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty …). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied and developed. Finally, the third movement contains a saltarello with a hypnotic rhythm, ending the work with flair and gusto.

Fanfare And Funk This work by Swiss composer Oliver Waespi was one of the highlights at the 2006 Eidgenössische Musikfest in Lucerne. The piece opens with a festive fanfare featuring the brass section. The mood changes to a funk passage which develops and grows into a James Brown-like groove. It also includes an ad libitum drum solo. A slow blues lends a calmer feel and the piece culminates with striking interwoven fanfare and funk styles. This work is highly recommended for concert programmes but it can also make a spectacular, unconventional choice for a competition.

Festive Impressions This brilliant opening work with the sub-heading „Cinematographic Overture” is guaranteed to make a great impression on your audience. The piece starts with solemn brass-band motifs, followed by melodic movements in the quiet middle part that leads to a rich climax. At the end of this refreshing work, there is a reprise of the brass bands which reflects the spirit of this music very well. After all, this is the intention of this work which was written specially for the „Musikverein Henggart” to celebrate their 75th anniversary.
