Arsenal Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' [railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It was premiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. In the meantime, Arsenal has been recorded several times by such renowed performers like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Black Dyke BB etc.

Orion There are all sorts of marches: fast and slow, solemn and energetic, military and civil, procession and funeral. Orion is a so-called ‘slow march’. However the moderate tempo does not make a passive or heavy impression. On the contrary, this march contains natural optimism and spontaneity. The persistant ‘pulse’ gives this majestic march a noble character

Exultation Exultation is a short and energetic concert opener that is similar to a palindrome. A fanfare opens the work, juxtaposing 3/4 and 6/8, reminiscent of Latin-American music. The main theme is first heard on the euphonium, horns and saxophones which is very bluesy. The contrasting second theme is short and spikey and played by the bass instruments of the band. A lyric melody emerges as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The second theme reappears which leads back to the ‘blues’ melody, which leads back to the opening fanfare. Palindromic!

Lugano Lugano is an exciting concert march that Franco Cesarini composed for the Civica Filarmonica di Lugano, which Cesarini has been conducting since 1998. The idyllic location of the Ticinese city and the happy disposition of its citizens provided Cesarini with more than enough inspiration, and this is reflected in Lugano’s uplifting themes.

Galileo For this spirited concert march, the creative and lively mind of the great Italian mathematician, physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei, who lived from 1564 to 1642, served as a source of inspiration. Galileo was the founder of experimental thinking in physics, and he made numerous discoveries and formulated many useful theories in this field. His reluctance to unquestioningly accept established authorities and ideas was also typical of his inventive mind. Moreover, Galileo was more accessible to the common people. He tried to encourage them to think for themselves, and he published his research results in the form of dialogues that were easy to understand. This accessible concert march - a suitable homage to Galileo - builds a bridge between the musician and the listener.

York'scher Marsch Beethoven’s York’scher Marsch is one of a collection of three tattoos (WoO 18-20) and has had a chequered history, to say the least. There are several autograph copies for different instrumentations, dedicated to different archdukes who were commanders of various regiments of the army including the Prussian regiment called Marsch des Yorkschen Corps, which is how its current title arose. Philip Sparke’s arrangement enables a march by this major classical composer to be enjoyed by concert bands.

Montana From the first bars the stately character of this solemn, yet celebratory, march is clearly heard. The introduction of the main theme takes place in the medium register, immediately resulting in a noble tone. A lyrical trio melody provides contrast, but the march closes in a festive and imposing mood. A march worthy of any concert program.

Apollo Like previous marches by Jan Van der Roost (Mercury, Arsenal, Helios, Minerva, Artemis, Montana...) the overall character of Apollo is rather stately and noble. Broad themes and a lyrical trio melody offer the opportunity for various registers to shine and to display their qualities, making this concert march a captivating experience for players and audience alike! Starting in a minor key, the march soon turns towards the major, reflecting the festive character of a true 'jubilee march'.

Aurum The magnificent concert march Aurum (lat. gold) was written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the cunductor of the municipal band of Wolfach, in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The march begins with a light and playful theme. The following lyrical trio provides a contrast, with its nod to Edward Elgar. After a number of key changes the introductory theme returns in canon. Finally, the music heads to a majestic finale, in which the trio theme is played as a splendid baroque chorale.
