The Wall The walls of Babylon, the Great Wall of China, the limes of the Roman Empire and the Berlin Wall are just a few examples of the walls mankind has built over past centuries. Today, building walls remains an issue, often under the pretext of ‘protection’ against intruders. This idea inspired Otto M. Schwarz to write a piece about the Roman limes between Germania and Rhaetia. From around 150 to 260 AD the wall faced numerous attacks. This programmatic work describes the events as they happened a long time ago, and addresses hope that these events belong to the past forever. The Wall is a work full of action in all-instrumental groups. This is an impressive piece with strong musical images, perfect for a contest or as an apotheosis in your concert.

A Princess’s Tale A Princess’s Tale is based on one of the best-known of all fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers with the original German title Schneewittchen. According to the mythologies the story actually took place in Spessart. It is even allegedly possible to identify specific reference points within the plot to Lohr and its environs. Thomas Doss has taken this opportunity to link this story to the area, and has even incorporated the motif from the famous “Spessart Song” into each of the four movements Once Upon a Time…, The Dwarfs, The Glass Coffin and The Princess’s Release and Wedding.

Castrum Alemorum The Castle of Allymes, “castrum Alemorum”, located on a hill in the centre of the seigneury of Allymes (France) is an historic castle dating back to the fourteenth century, rebuilt in the sixteenth century and restored in the nineteenth. This piece evokes an image of the castle, its beautiful location within the surrounding landscape and its importance for the rural district of Ambérieu-en-Bugey. Combining beautiful melodies with rhythmical sections and modern sounds with passages in a renaissance style, this work of Jacob de Haan is an impressive musical challenge that is both fun to play as well as appealing for your audience: as you listen you can almost see the castle before your eyes.

Town of the Seven Hills This 4-movement suite tells the story of the beautiful French town ‘Tulle’ that was built on seven hills, just like Rome and Lisbon. The composer depicts the history of the town, as well as important events such as the bloodbath during World War II, the fabric ‘tulle’ after which the town is named and the festive annual fair. Since Tulle is also known for the production of accordions, the composer added an ‘ad libitum’ accordion part. A really charming and stylish concert or contest work!

Fanfare for a New Horizon This fanfare stands for progress and the discovery of new horizons. But it also represents an expanding awareness while nurturing traditional values. These are the cornerstones of the Austrian music tradition and not least of all in social and amateur music, which must be preserved the world over for future generations.

Zodiac Dances Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band’s history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band’s foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese ‘Junishi’. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concert work!

The Last Giant On the Wildon Mountain, deep inside Austria, there once lived generations of giants, terrorizing the inhabitants of the valley. However, the people of the valley were determined to put an end to the barbaric invaders. This programmatic piece tells the story of the events step by step, or rather bar by bar. A spectacular and variegated piece for concert or contest, with lots of action in the different registers, as well as beautiful thematic materials throughout the piece.

Gulliver's Travels The book Gullivers Travels" (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The ships doctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. LilliputThe enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common theme in the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bass instruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase the tension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitive yahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues are provided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built."

Puszta In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances.

Stratosphere What do the American Joseph Kittinger and the Austrian Felix Baumgartner have in common? They both jumped from over 30km high with a parachute. While Kittinger’s attempt on 16 August 1960 was from a height of ‘only’ 31,333 meters, Felix Baumgartner broke this record on 14 October 2012 with a breath-taking 38,969 meters.

This composition Stratosphere describes the adventure, from climbing into the capsule with help of a balloon, to the short pause in the stratosphere, and the jump, the turbulence during the free-fall descent, and finally the opening of the parachute and the safe landing.

Ross Roy Jacob de Haan was commissioned to compose this concert piece by the "St. Peters Wind Symphony" from Brisbane, Australia. "Ross Roy" is the monumental late 19th century villa where St. Peters Lutheran College was founded in 1945. The villa has always remained the school symbol. In this composition, Jacob de Haan sees the "Ross Roy" as a metaphor for the years spent at school (a monument in time), where one's personality is formed. So, the opening theme the artist calls the Ross Roy theme initially has monumental characteristics. The rhythmic motion, which strides along in the lower register and percussion at the beginning of the next section is typical of "Tempo di Marcia". This movement, accompanied by repetitions of sound, is a metaphor for the structure and discipline in school. This is the introduction to a march theme, symbolic of "passing through" the classes up to the final examinations. Then, the Ross Roy theme is dealt with again, now in a playful, humorous variation. As if the composer is saying there should also be time for a smile in school. The same theme can be heard in major key and a slower tempo in the following section, expressing pride and self-confidence. This is also the introduction to the expressive middle section that represents love, friendship and understanding. We then return to the march theme in a slightly altered construction. The oriental sounds, constituting the modulation to the final theme, are symbols of the diversity of cultures in the school. The characteristic final theme first sounds solemn, but turns into a festive apotheosis. It is no coincidence that the final cadence is reminiscent of the close to a traditional overture, for the school years can be considered the "overture" to the rest of one's life. The premiere of "Ross Roy" was conducted by Jacob de Haan in Brisbane, on August 22, 1997.

A Klezmer Karnival Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Greek Folk Song Suite Greek folk music is characterised by the sound of the ‘buzuki’ which is often used in combination with the clarinet, the mandolin, the violin and various types of tambourines. In Greek Folk Song Suite, Franco Cesarini has elaborated on three songs belonging to this most ancient tradition. The first, O Haralambis, is in 7/8 time, a characteristic of a popular folk dance called kalamatianos. Originally, the song O Haralambis was sung to ‘tease’ during weddings with the text of the song refering to a young man who refuses to marry. The second movement, Stu Psiloriti, refers to an ancient song from the island of Crete. The third movement of the suite is based on the song Vasilikos tha gino and is characterised by the sirtaki, probably the most popular Greek dance outside of Greece. This is Greek passion portrayed by a concert band!

Of Castles and Legends The programmatic composition Of Castles and Legends is basedon the German legend of the white maiden who lived in the smallcity of Volkmarsen. It tells the tale of invading evil knights whokidnap a beautiful maiden, who through sheer panic commandedher spirit into the hands of God and by jumping into the abyss fromthe highest tower of the castle where she was being held. Fromthat day onward, she appeared from time to time, in shiny whitegarments, a sign of eternal heavenly joy.
