Crossroads Crossroads is an attractive concert work of four interconnected movements, written for the 23rd music festival of the Bernese Cantonal Music Association in Aarwangen, Switzerland. The work has the river Aare to thank for the title of Crossroads — it was an important trading hub, especially until the age of road building in the 18th century. The lively introduction is followed by a beautiful waltz and a romantic middle section. In the robust finale the orchestra can really roll its sleeves up!

A Knight's Tale In A Knight's Tale, Wilco Moerman takes the listener back to the Middle Ages, when castles, knights’ tournaments and charming ladies were the order of the day. It describes scenes of the middle ages as one would expect from fairytales or movies featuring this period - with a duel between knights, hidden romances and a battlefield. The composer makes sure that all groups are well represented and includes lots of brass and percussion as well as chanting melodies and spectacular virtuoso segments which make this piece a perfect contest or concert opportunity.

Antarctica Carl Wittrock was inspired by huge icefields surrounding the South Pole. Colourful and majestic sounds provide the composition a fascinating view of this "6th" continent. Antarctica is a free impression of the scenery in the Antarctic. Melodies are linked together to convey the various aspects of the landscape. These melodies together with their simple harmonic accompaniments make this work pleasant for both the listener and the musician.

Brabantia Aeterna In 2006 Brabant will be celebrating it’s 900th anniversary. On May 13th 1106 the count Van Leuven was appointed duke of Brabant. This was the birth of the duchy of Brabant. For centuries this duchy, situated in the heart of the Netherlands, was the primary of the seventeen provinces in the Lowlands. Brabant formed with it’s capital cities Brussels, Leuven, Antwerp and ‘s-Hertogenbosch the focal point for politics, culture and economy. The revolution against Spain (1566-1648) caused a fracture between the North and South. The old duchy was divided into a Dutch and Belgian part. Even though each had their own historical background, the bond forged in the past was partially kept alive. To this day we still have a duke of Brabant. Brabantia Aeterna takes you on a musical journey through 900 years of Brabant history. A fascinating journey portraying war and peace, love and grief, prosperity and adversity, development and deterioration. Listen to how monks chanted, bells tolled and churches were built. Or take the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries with their bustling markets, builders of cities or the bleating of countless sheep across the heather. The plague, tribulations, soldiers and political bickering in the following centuries. Hear how the industrialisation of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries provided prosperity for the region and how to this day the following saying still applies: ‘the road to Brabant leads to a warmer world’ Brabantia Aeterna was commissioned by the Brabantse Bond van Muziekverenigingen (Brabant Music Society) in honour of its fifth anniversary.

Land of Legends In ‘Land of Legends’ German composer Andreas Ludwig (what’s in a name) Schulte takes you along to the fictional world of legends, myths and fairy tales.
The introduction to the first part (The Castle) describes the majestic contours of the scene of action. Its instrumentation (horns) immediately makes you imagine being in Medieval spheres.
The addition of trenchant copper instruments even gives the part a heroic tinge. After entering through the gate, a lot of hustle and bustle appears to be going on in the courtyard. Pages, squires and soldiers are busy attending to their arms. Beer is being brewed, flax is being spun, cattle are being tended and some craftsmen from neighbouring villages are busily at work.
In the upper chamber of the round tower lives an old man (The Old Wizard). He hardly ever comes out, and nobody knows exactly what he is doing. It is said that he is engaged in wizardry and magic. It is all very mysterious.
There are also festivities, some of them sober, others exuberant.
The wedding in the third part is celebrated in a grand manner. With a flourish of trumpets, the bride makes her entrance at the hand of her father. Afterwards, at the party there is dancing to the music played by minstrels and of course a plentiful banquet follows.

The Baron of Dedem The Baron of Dedem once ruled over a large plot of peat in the Netherlands. 1809 saw the beginning of the construction of a canal to transport this fuel, so important in those days. The canal was named after the Baron, as was the nearby village. This work describes the establishment of the canal and the village, but also life in the region nowadays, thereby setting a slice of Dutch life to music.

Whistle for a Penny The title Whistle for a Penny can have different meanings, but brings especially to mind the difficult relationship between art and money… After a short introduction, the main theme is heard. This theme is an excellent tune to whistle, by the way. After lots of variation in the instrumentation, as well as contrasting melodies and themes, the finale sees a return to the opening bars of the composition.

Free Day This cheerful and varied piece is characterised by its ABA form. The first motif is developed with energy and vigour right from the start. The second movement is more serious and exudes an air of romance too. The third and final movement takes elements of the introduction, which together with a rather complex rhythmic line, lead to a triumphant conclusion.

Tignale His love for Italy explains Carl Wittrock solid in the composition Tignale, named after the same village that he visited one of his vacations.
This village dominates the image of the western shore of Lake Garda, where it has a view on the Monte Baldo at the other side of the lake.
It is a busy resort and center for excursions in the area.
The enchanting location and stunning natural beauty inspired the composer to a musical description of Tignale and its surroundings.
An impressive work and a wonderful challenge for orchestras in the middle section.

The Battle of Varlar The work calls to mind an important event from the history of the city Coesfeld in Germany: the battle of Varlar, which took place in the year 1454. The composition presents us with a bird's eye view of the events: First of all, the consecration of the chapel on the Klinkenberg mountain is set to music in a hymn, after which the trumpets and trombones announce the imminent battle. In the subsequent fray not only the sounds of sabres and rapiers can clearly be heard but also the wailing of the wounded. When the Duke of Brunswick is wounded and captured by the troops of Walraf, Konrad von Diepen and his men march on Coesfeld in victory. Set against a festive melody, the hymn resounds in full glory.
