Balkan Dance The Balkans region has always been a source of musical inspiration for composers throughout the centuries. Strong rhythms and often-abundant musical climaxes are two important characteristics of this rich and varied musical style. Etienne Crausaz took some of these elements and mixed it with elements of rock, turning this Balkan Dance into an exuberant and spectacular piece of music, during which no one can remain seated!

Spirit of Andalusia Spirit of Andalusia was commissioned by The Glasgow Wind Band. The brief was to create a fascinating 5-minute opener, however, during the compositional process, the piece started to take the form of a Spanish influenced composition. The composer decided to stick to this involuntary development and started producing a tribute to Spanish music, in particular, Flamenco - which originates from the region of Andalusia. He uses exciting rhythms and colours from the musical culture.

Puszta In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances.

The Way to Heaven The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.
The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

A Weekend in New York Philip Sparke was so inspired and moved by his first visit to New York, that he had to capture the moment in one of his compositions. At first a general picture of New York is presented as all the sights and sounds are taken it. Eventually the composer finds himself in Manhattan. Walking along a street, music can be heard wafting from one of the jazz-clubs. This musical representation of personal impressions creates an extremely memorable work.

The Best of Earth, Wind & Fire Earth, Wind & Fire was formed by jazz drummer Maurice White, whose aim was to mix various music styles to produce a unique sound. Combined with excellent song writing and fine performances this sound made Earth, Wind & Fire one of the most influential soul groups of the seventies. In subsequent decades they experienced varying success but this medley reflects the heyday of this legendary group. In his job as staff arranger with the Royal Marine Band of the Dutch Navy, Peter Kleine Schaars wrote many top class arrangements. The talent of the musicians in the band made it possible to write in such a way that they closely resembled the original works. Consequently this medley shines just like the original versions by Earth, Wind & Fire. Four famous songs have been used: In the Stone, Got to Get You into My Life, After the Love Has Gone and September.

Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song Reflections on an Old Japanese Folk Song is based on the tune Suiryo-Bushi, which comes from the shamisen tradition and opens with two contrasting statements of the melody followed by several variations each in an own style based upon the same tune, or sometimes only fragments of it. In one of the variants, the pentatonic scale is used. The final section is in the form of a scherzo, which eventually forms the accompaniment to a final presentation of the folk tune. Flowers of Dreams This work was commissioned by the Rokko Verde Wind Orchestra in Japan. Musically it depicts aspects of both the beautiful, open-minded home of the Wind Orchestra - the Kobe City of Hyogo Prefecture - as well as the hope felt following the difficulty of the 1995 Hanshin-Awaii earthquake. Satoshi Yagisawa uses an impressive chorale as a cornerstone of this piece, which is written in his recognisable energetic style.

Pulse Pulse is a solo work for baritone or euphonium and concert band. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the baritone, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. Even though the piece stays at a constant tempo, it can be performed at half speed. This work is dedicated to the young soloist Felix Geroldinger of upper Austria.
