Gulliver's Travels The book Gullivers Travels" (1726) by author Jonathan Swift formed the provocation for writing this composition. Even though this composition isnt a literal representation of the original story, a number of elements were still retained. The ships doctor Gulliver finds himself in 4 (fictive) areas, each with their own inhabitants and customs. Each part of this suite also received the name of one of these areas:I. LilliputThe enterprising Lilliputians are represented by a playful, common theme in the first part.II. BrobdingnagIn the land of "Brobdingnag" Gulliver is carried off by gigantic giants, which you hear approaching with the sounds of the bass instruments. The same theme is constantly repeated and quickened in order to increase the tension.III. LaputaLaputa is an island that floats in the air; its inhabitants are strange people with slanting heads. The dreamy, special atmosphere is especially well conveyed here.IV. The HouyhnhnmsFinally Gulliver finds himself in the land of the Houyhnhnms, where intelligent and noble horses rule over the primitive, undeveloped people (yahoos). The trumpets in the brilliant opening express the galloping horses; the gallant theme that follows (horns and trombones) symbolises the primitive yahoos. The whole composition ends with a big finale.I intentionally tried to limit the degree of difficulty of Gullivers Travels. Despite this I think that this work can appeal to many orchestras due to the colourful orchestration (cues are provided where needed), the simple and clear theme and the highly imaginative breeding ground of a beautiful story around which this composition is built."

Winds on Fire This work was commissioned by two fanfare bands from Loksbergen and Kortenaken in Belgium, that have merged to form one single ensemble. This festive work has been constructed using two contrasting elements: a rhythmic, fast theme full of character, combined with a melodic, sensitive and slow theme. The title refers to the enthusiastic, fiery character of the opening passage, the fast section, and the renewed passion and drive that has been created due to the merging of the two bands.

Morning Star Variations This composition is based on the beautiful chorale melody Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern (How beautifully the morning star shines). Like the chorale fantasias by Bach and Buxtehude, this is a fantasia in which the original theme is used and altered throughout the work in various ways. Slow passages are alternated with fast ones, and finally a grand tutti arrives in which the original chorale theme sounds joyfully in a majestic finale. For extra colour and dimension, an optional organ part has been added, that can be used when the circumstances are appropriate. On the full score, the various organ entries are indicated.

Return of the Vikings This composition paints a picture of belligerent and brave Vikings. After a short introduction the lofty main theme is heard, accompanied by sombre drum sounds. A brief idyllic passage follows that evokes a beautiful landscape. Gradually, a heroic melody is revealed, leading to a great tutti, in which the rousing main theme is heard once more. Return of the Vikings closes with the sound of heroic brass and festive chords.

The Green Hill This piece was commissioned by Swiss euphonium virtuoso Erich Schmidli. Bert Appermont dug deep into Celtic music for inspiration and created a fantasy that shows off the incredible, but often overlooked, versatility of the euphonium. Charming lyrical melodies, virtuosic runs and exciting, colourful tuttis create plenty of contrast in this exciting work. The difficulty level for the soloist and band means almost any band to perform this piece and showcase their euphonium player.

Ivanhoe The renowned book "Ivanhoe" by Sir Walter Scott (1791) formed the starting point when writing this heroic composition. In fact its the emotional tension and atmosphere of the book (instead of the original story line) that is represented musically in 3 parts.Part 1 refers to the sense of honour and the pride of the knight who fights for his ideals. After a bombastic opening a noble hymn follows that turns into a dansant theme in 6/8 time.In the middle part the difficulty of choosing between love and loyalty is expressed (Ivanhoe loves Rebecca, but must marry Princess Rowena) in a compelling and increasingly modulating theme (agitation) that builds up to a climax. Then the turmoil of battle erupts (part 3) which conveys the personal vendetta between Ivanhoe and Templar Brian. The piece ends in a magnificent finale where the bombastic opening and noble hymn from the beginning are resumed.

El Cid El Cid was the name of the legendary knight and folk hero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar Cameador, the man who never lost a duel. After a typically Spanish opening, a slower section follows in which the composer makes reference to Albinoni's Adagio and to the slow movement from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto d'Aranjuez. The music is whipped up with Spanish passion at the close, and castanets are a must! The solo part can be played by trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet or alto saxophone and is also available in a simplified version.

Jericho Jericho is the musical translation of the well-known story from the book of Joshua about the capture of the city of Jericho by the Israelites.Part 1 depicts the cruel journey through the desert to Canaan, the promised land. An emotional lamentation for the yearning for a home, for the end of a roaming existence. The capture of Jericho is the theme of part 2. The city cannot be captured immediately and Jehovah orders an impressive army to march around the city for six days. On the seventh day, they marched around the city seven times and the priests blew their trumpets and the people cried so loud that the walls of Jericho came tumbling down. The Jews stormed the city and drove the inhabitants away. The music clearly reveals the marching army and you can hear the walls falling down with a tremendous noise. However, there is quite some artistic freedom in the actual story.A majestic and grand melody subsequently evokes the triumphant emotions that emerged as the fortified city fell (part 3).Following a personal and romantic interpretation, the scene ultimately ends in a typical Jewish feast (part 4) whereby the virtuosity of melodies played by the woodwinds and the passionate rhythms refer to traditional Jewish music. All themes are repeated in this last part in various forms, often simultaneous and in duelling counterpoint. The piece ends with fragments from the main theme of part 1 in major: peace and quiet return at last.

Robinson Crusoe This work is based on Daniel Defoe's world-famous 1719 novel and with broad brushstrokes typifies the hero's life in four parts. The first part describes his life as a seaman. The second part is an impressive, stormy description of the shipwreck he falls victim to. The next covers his happy life with his friend Friday, which takes the form of a melodious hymn. Lastly, the fourth part describes the tense confrontation with the Cannibals and his return home.

In the Shadow of Napoleon This suite is based on the musical In the Shadow of Napoleon which celebrated its exceptionally successful première in Worms, Germany, on 21 July 2014. The musical tells the story of Louis-Joseph Marchand, Napoleon’s footman who is involved in the dispute over the emperor’s inheritance and the unsolved mystery of his death. The composer strove to present the six musical songs in the suite in such a way that it appears to be an entirely new work.

Crazy for Christmas Christmas is the time of the year where everyone comes together, and peace, family and friendship bonds are strengthened. When selecting repertoire for your Christmas concert, it’s difficult to find new arrangements that are both challenging and fun to work on, as well as fun for the audience. Crazy for Christmas is one of those pieces by the Belgian composer Bert Appermont. He uses canons and even fugues throughout this arrangement and foresees a spectacular ending. It is based on Il est né le divin Enfant and Away in a Manger but refers wittily to Jingle Bells, Deck the Halls, The Twelve Days of Christmas and Hark, the Herald AngelsSing. So ‘crazy’ all the way!

Hymn of Glory This melodic hymn begins with a lyrical melody, handled by various instrument groups. After a gradual build, a first climax is reached, in which the brass instruments give full vent to their glorious sound in jubilation. Now we hear a second theme, resounding in the euphoniums, which ushers in a moment of rest. Then the excitement gathers again, building to a great tutti. The main theme is taken up once more, sounding now as a kind of universal gratitude.

Humperdinck Variations After attending a performance of Hänsel und Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer decided to write a commissioned piece for 4 horns and concert band based on the beautiful melody “Abendsegen”, as used in Engelbert’s famous overture. The composition can be performed with three or four solo horns with cues in the others parts and in the band. This work can be played with the horn section of your own band; the two extra horn parts noted in the full score are optional and can be left out.
