A Princess’s Tale A Princess’s Tale is based on one of the best-known of all fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers with the original German title Schneewittchen. According to the mythologies the story actually took place in Spessart. It is even allegedly possible to identify specific reference points within the plot to Lohr and its environs. Thomas Doss has taken this opportunity to link this story to the area, and has even incorporated the motif from the famous “Spessart Song” into each of the four movements Once Upon a Time…, The Dwarfs, The Glass Coffin and The Princess’s Release and Wedding.

Of Castles and Legends The programmatic composition Of Castles and Legends is basedon the German legend of the white maiden who lived in the smallcity of Volkmarsen. It tells the tale of invading evil knights whokidnap a beautiful maiden, who through sheer panic commandedher spirit into the hands of God and by jumping into the abyss fromthe highest tower of the castle where she was being held. Fromthat day onward, she appeared from time to time, in shiny whitegarments, a sign of eternal heavenly joy. A Little Suite of Horror A Little Suite of Horror is an easy suite for beginner bands, consisting of five contrasting movements. With this piece it is also possible to pick and choose only a few movements to showcase at a concert as well. The story behind this composition is somewhat grim and ghoulish, so prepare your musicians and audience for a nerve-wracking experience!Friday the 13th: A day unlike any other runs its mysterious course...Midnight Scene: Footsteps, creaking, and the hoot of an owl precede the twelve strokes of midnight ringing from the steeple. Suddenly, a fairy-like apparition appears in the room.Wurdalak: "Wurdalak" is a vampiresque creature roaming about the Slavic countries. A single bite makes entire villages cower and tremble in fear. Voodoo: Performing voodoo rituals has enchanted many a human over the years. Halloween Party March: Jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, zombies, and other creepy characters march down the street. Is anyone brave enough to join this haunted parade?

Momentum The Latin word Momentum has come to mean many different things in our language: a short period of time, a force, or a speed of movement. In our current times of around-the-clock high speed and energy, the composer wanted to write a refl ective and meditative piece that focuses on the moment at hand. An ideal point of rest for your concert programme!

Jungle In this fascinating piece we experience an exciting adventure in the jungle. The entrance into the “green hell” turns out to be very dangerous with wild monkeys and the roaring of elephants accompanying our way through the dark forest. There seems to be something lurking behind every tree and all of a sudden, a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return…. The effects (elephants, wild monkeys, exotic birds and rain) should be produced with much creativity - individual ideas are always desirable and welcome.

Pulse Pulse is a solo work for baritone or euphonium and concert band. As the title suggests, this piece is very rhythmic in nature. Pulse represents life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by the baritone, the pulse of the timpani continues to beat steadily. Even though the piece stays at a constant tempo, it can be performed at half speed. This work is dedicated to the young soloist Felix Geroldinger of upper Austria.

Canzone di Francesco This beautiful and intense slow composition including lots of melodic and musical sequences is dedicated to Saint Francis-a figure whose life story has always impressed the composer. He had previously honoured Francis of Assisi in several works including a composition for strings, an oratorio, a mass and a Laudate for choir and concert band. Canzone di Francesco will create a moment of meditation and reflection during your concert, but is also very suitable as a warm up piece offering various possibilities to work on intonation, phrasing and sound building.

Green Hills Fantasy This composition describes a landscape in the Upper Austrian region of Mühlviertel. This area was once besieged by the Celts, who spread fear and terror among the inhabitants, however the people opposed the enemy with patience and courage. Their uncompromising love of life demonstrated how unyielding they were and finally, the Celts had to withdraw from Mühlviertel. The region is still one of the most beautiful landscapes in Austria, and the people who live there are proof that tradition and progress are not necessarily contradictory. Green Hills Fantasy gives you a chance to hear this fantastic landscape immortalized in a wonderful piece for Concert Band.

Scherzpolka In the somewhat sarcastic Scherzpolka (Joke Polka), the composer does not intend to make fun of Alpine traditions and music but rather of the typical social attitude that does not always do justice to the valuable folk music and culture. Imagine a band that has to play in a beer tent for hours. During the performance the guests treat the musicians to one beer after another. Gradually, the players and the conductor lose control over their instruments and their interpretation of the music. Finally, the performance comes to an end: the Scherzpolka is actually the last piece. There are no limits to the creativity in both the visual and musical aspects during a performance of the Scherzpolka!

Dona Nobis Pacem Dona Nobis Pacem is a three-part round by an unknown composer. It can be performed for many occasions, both in and outside church, often being used at Christmas. By the time of the holy crusades, this melody was incorporated into the Mass Ordinary (the manual of the holy mass). Dona Nobis Pacem is a free fantasia on this round, which itself naturally forms a part of the piece. If desired you can add vocals (solo or choir) to the band to enhance the spiritual feel of this fantastic work.

Clockwork In vivid, imaginative musical pictures Clockwork tells the story of a young girl who finds it hard to get up in the mornings: Every evening Barbara sets her alarm so that she doesn’t sleep in and isn’t late for school. Today, as usual, she can´t make it, and lets her alarm ring again and again. She dozes off and dreams of lovely things - landscapes and stories - while time flies by and the clock continues to tick. As the big living room clock loudly strikes eight, however, she jumps up, startled - school has already begun! Now she’ll be late again…

Montana Fanfare This piece was composed as a birthday present for the Austrian conductor Walter Rescheneder to acknowledge the strong support he has given to the composer, Thomas Doss. Doss drew the inspiration for this fanfare from a mountain hike in the Salzkammergut. A powerful fanfare reveals enthusiasm and triumph. It is an exulting feeling and gives boundless freedom to look down into the depths from high up giving a view of the stunning landscape. The main melodic theme represents the feeling of vastness one experiences by taking just one quick glance into the distance. A musical treat!
