THOMAS DOSS

Introduce yourself:

I was born in Linz into a family of musicians. Music has always been the centre of my life, so eventually I turned it into my profession. At the age of nine I began to compose and conducted the premiere of my first Symphony at the age of 19. I completed my studies in Salzburg, Vienna, Linz, Los Angeles and Maastricht. Next to teaching, conducting and composing, I commit myself to all musical genres and I learn something new every day. It is a big privilege for me to to lead the life of a composer, and to write for a great publisher. Besides my family, who gives meaning to my life, I’m interested in politics, art, nature and social issues.

What inspired you to start composing?

Already at the age of 5 I heard orchestras play in my mind, no knowing where the music came from. Also, my parents’ musical profession influenced me very much and I spent a lot of time at rehearsals, concerts and in theatres. My great-grandfather was a composer and a K&K-Kapellmeister. You might say, it was in my genes to take up the pen. The music simply had to come out.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

I’m very much interested in foreign cultures. Particularly the customs, instruments and rites of Asia and indigenous people have continuously inspired me. Much the same as other composers and natural, physical and spiritual phenomena and many artists with whom I worked. Apart from the Concert Band, I have a strong love for the Symphony Orchestra, as I grew up with it, have played in and conducted it. Anton Bruckner is my hero. My greatest inspiriation, however, are sounds, instruments, orchestras and people who make music. It is very important to me to bring my music and my own tonal language to the people, and to see, that it arouses their joy, interest and curiosity.

Your top 5 symphonic works

David Maslanka – Symphony No. 4

Frank Ticheli – Blue Shades

Percy Grainger – Lincolnshire Posy

Philip Sparke – Sinfonietta 2

Friedrich Gulda – Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra

What is your next project?

I won’t be bored. Next to many invitations, master classes and travels, I have completed four orchestral works this year. I have just finished a work for Symphony Orchestra about Johannes Kepler and I’m working on an arrangement of the Romany hymn “Gelem” for the well-known guitarist Harrie Stojka, his band and the Vienna Symphonics. Furthermore, there’s a Concerto for Percussion and Wind Band and some more projects on my list.

Pilgrim Concerto The Pilgrim Concerto, written for the 2012 World Music Contest Kerkrade, is a highly demanding yet rewarding work for alto saxophone and wind band. It is one of a series of spiritual works by the composer which also includes Symphony in Green. Sometimes minimalistic and at other times romantic, it describes a pilgrim who is at times calmy meditative, but also full of anxious impatience to reach his goal.

Time Machine Time Machine is a journey through time that begins in the Stone Age. Evolution and the coming of man take place. The journey takes us into the present, in which disorientation and chaos abound. We travel further into the future. An unfamiliar, quiet and surreal landscape lies before us and we wander through it, bewildered as we become aware of the destruction of the environment. Suddenly, and for no reason, memories from our childhood are awoken. Cultures have become completely mixed into one and the evolution of man has run its course. We realise that there is no “afterwards” as before us lies the Stone Age once again... The wheel of time spins blindly on and all is repeated.

The Colors of Tali Tali is a thirteen-year-old Israeli girl who has grown up amidst the religious conflicts between Palestinians, Christians, and Jews. Thomas Doss was so touched by a poem she wrote, he decided to set it to music. The poem and the music describe the world from a child’s perspective, a child that has grown up with war and tries to express things she cannot yet fully understand.

Power Play The composer has dedicated this piece to hischildren. From a parent’s point of view, childhoodpasses by too quickly. However, at other times thedays seem endless - particularly those days whenchildren keep their parents so busy and pushed tothe limit that they don’t know if they’re coming orgoing. Scraped knees, crayoned walls and ravagedplayrooms are the ingredients for a battle of wills -a real “power play.” However, one enchantingsmile from a child is enough to make the hardwork worth it. This piece was written in the middleof teddy bears, toy cars and Lego bricks.

Fanfare in Iubilo The power of this striking fanfare reflects the optimism, joy and the commitment to tradition that the people of the Italian town of Schlanders hold deep within their souls. The golden trumpets from the valleys of the South Tyrol echo across the mountains on both sides of the Austrian-Italian border, and help to convey the composer’s message - just as the sun shines on all parts of the world, music knows no boundaries. Pathétique In common conversation, the term ?bathetic? (pathétique in French) means a grossly sentimental pathos, or exaggerated sympathy. True pathos, however, is really showing your feelings ? crying when you need to cry, having courage when needed, showing commitment when required. Pathétique reflects all these feelings in a stately and dignified manor. A truly emotional major concert work.

Sketches from Nowhere Sketches from Nowhere is the second composition that Thomas Doss has written for brass band. The title was inspired by various images the composer saw in his mind’s eye while working on this piece: pictures of foreign places; pictures of the creation of our world. The main motif that weaves its way from the beginning to the end of the work is meant to parallel humanity’s great evolution: from its humble beginnings as mere stardust to the present day.

Enjoy the Music ‘Enjoy the Music’ is the motto of Austrian composer Thomas Doss. This motto is reflected in this lively concert work in which the composer shows music is melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamics, timbre and much more. This item will be a definite favourite with both performers and audience.

Green Hills Fantasy This composition describes a landscape in the Upper Austrian region of Mühlviertel. This area was once besieged by the Celts, who spread fear and terror among the inhabitants, however the people opposed the enemy with patience and courage. Their uncompromising love of life demonstrated how unyielding they were and finally, the Celts had to withdraw from Mühlviertel. The region is still one of the most beautiful landscapes in Austria, and the people who live there are proof that tradition and progress are not necessarily contradictory. Green Hills Fantasy gives you a chance to hear this fantastic landscape immortalized in a wonderful piece for Concert Band.

Dona Nobis Pacem Dona Nobis Pacem is a three-part round by an unknown composer. It can be performed for many occasions, both in and outside church, often being used at Christmas. By the time of the holy crusades, this melody was incorporated into the Mass Ordinary (the manual of the holy mass). Dona Nobis Pacem is a free fantasia on this round, which itself naturally forms a part of the piece. If desired you can add vocals (solo or choir) to the band to enhance the spiritual feel of this fantastic work.

Stone Age Stone Age, Middle Age and New Age are the three distinct sections of this single movement work at the highest level. Whilst Stone Age has a menacing and ancient atmosphere, an old German song can be made out in Middle Age – vocals, guitar, recorder or even bagpipes can be incorporated into the melody, which gradually gives up merry Celtic dances. In New Age, the ‘present’, the Celtic sounds finally connect with untamed, rousing dance rhythms.

A Little Suite of Horror A Little Suite of Horror is an easy suite for beginner bands, consisting of five contrasting movements. With this piece it is also possible to pick and choose only a few movements to showcase at a concert as well. The story behind this composition is somewhat grim and ghoulish, so prepare your musicians and audience for a nerve-wracking experience!Friday the 13th: A day unlike any other runs its mysterious course...Midnight Scene: Footsteps, creaking, and the hoot of an owl precede the twelve strokes of midnight ringing from the steeple. Suddenly, a fairy-like apparition appears in the room.Wurdalak: "Wurdalak" is a vampiresque creature roaming about the Slavic countries. A single bite makes entire villages cower and tremble in fear. Voodoo: Performing voodoo rituals has enchanted many a human over the years. Halloween Party March: Jack-o-lanterns, skeletons, zombies, and other creepy characters march down the street. Ouverture Allemande This festive overture by the Austrian composer Thomas Doss, whose father was German, is intended to be a symbol of the friendship between Germany and Austria, and the countries that border on these two states. In times of union and cooperation, the European thinking should be one of tolerance and openness when it comes to national identities and cultures. European culture has many faces - that is what makes it unique. The shadows of the past, however, should never be forgotten, but they must not obscure the present and the future. Many ghosts wander through this overture, and those who listen carefully will also hear a great master of classical music ghost around. A creative new opening work for any concert.

Panoptikum Armin Schaer commissioned this work in his search for a new piece for the tuba. More specifically, he wanted a work that showed off the versatility of this splendid instrument, written in a musical style that is both fresh and modern, while not banishing the orchestra to a simple supporting role. Taking all these specifications into account, Thomas Doss created a work that allows stylistic leaps and is fun, exciting, romantic, and virtuosic, but does not lose sight of the thread that connects the opening measures to the very last.Armin Schaer describes his Panoptikum as follows:Panoptikum is a show of appreciation for my beautiful home and community at Lake Constance, an eventful life, the people that have enriched this life, and a fascinating instrument: the tuba. This work musically embodies the many different moods found around theBodensee - cheerfulness and melancholy, departures and longing, calm and agitation. The roles of the soloist and the orchestra were consciously crafted in a way that does not follow the usual conventions of the genre. The work should spark emotions, address broad segments of listeners, and persuade them of the tuba’s ability to be a solo instrument as well as the richness symphonic wind ensembles have to offer. I hope this work enriches the lives of all the soloists and orchestras that cross its path, as well as everyone in the audience who gets to partake!

Fanatic Winds Fanatic Winds is a lively concert work with a youthful character. With it’s freshness and fast tempo this piece is an ideal work to open any concert. The title reflects the healthy fanaticism that musicians must have to go to rehearsals every week after work or school dedicating many hours to their band. Following much hard work this fanaticism is always rewarded by the joy of performing and the audience’s applause during a concert. Along with a passion for playing, the positive reactions of the audience provide the necessary encouragement to keep the players coming back for rehearsals time and time again.

Toccata e Fantasia Toccata e Fantasia was inspired by the composers’ love of Anton Bruckner’s fantastic wind instrument scoring in his symphonies. Within Toccata e Fantasia Thomas Doss has used several of Bruckner’s motifs. In addition to these obvious references you will also find hints of Eastern music with the small motifs being repeated again and again in a sort of Indian guru’s mantra, and an improvised blues section with a Big Band feel! Die Himmel rühmen des Ewigen Ehre Master-composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn, in 1770, but he lived in Vienna from 1792, until his death in 1827. With his innovative style, he has had a great influence on Western classical music. ‘Die Himmel rühmen des Ewigen Ehre’ (The Heavens Extol the Glory of God) is the first line of the poem ‘Die Ehre Gottes in der Natur’, which was written by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert (1715-1769). The music that Beethoven composed to the text, was published in 1803, as the fourth Lied (song) in a cycle of six (6 Lieder nach Gedichten von Gellert, opus 48). Thomas Doss has arranged the song - in which nature, as created by God, is mirrored majestically - into a wonderful work for concert band.Choir parts available separately: 1589-09-050 M

Ave Maria The Ave Maria by Franz Schubert is known and loved worldwide and was originally written as part of the song cycle The Lady of the Lake. In the course of time, the German text has been replaced by the traditional Latin prayer so often that the song has become known as the Ave Maria by Schubert. This lyrical melody, stirring in its simplicity, is complemented by a murmuring accompaniment that imitates a harp, a feature that Thomas Doss fully does justice to in this arrangement.

Jungle In this fascinating piece we experience an exciting adventure in the jungle. The entrance into the “green hell” turns out to be very dangerous with wild monkeys and the roaring of elephants accompanying our way through the dark forest. There seems to be something lurking behind every tree and all of a sudden, a horde of savage cannibals appears. A wild hunt sets off and we escape at the last second by jumping from a cliff into the savage water below. Exotic birds welcome us in a new landscape and from somewhere in the distance we can hear a bamboo flute playing. This is a journey of no return…. Galileo For this spirited concert march, the creative and lively mind of the great Italian mathematician, physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei, who lived from 1564 to 1642, served as a source of inspiration. Galileo was the founder of experimental thinking in physics, and he made numerous discoveries and formulated many useful theories in this field. His reluctance to unquestioningly accept established authorities and ideas was also typical of his inventive mind. Moreover, Galileo was more accessible to the common people. He tried to encourage them to think for themselves, and he published his research results in the form of dialogues that were easy to understand. Bruckner’s spirit is captured in this composition by a quote from the chorale of his Fifth Symphony at the end of the piece. The introduction, written in the style of a funeral march, already displays the first fragments of the chorale. Like splinters they are strewn throughout the first Allegro, combining and recombining in turbulent, powerful tutti passages. As the music becomes more rambunctious, the Bach-like fragments begin to swirl around each other, only to be scattered once more. The middle-section is of a more pensive nature. The Religioso character gives the audience time to reflect. The music is meditative and the quarter-note (or crotchet) elements mimic a soul that is yearning and crying out.The third part of the piece finally leads, by way of minimalist elements and the fragments mentioned earlier, to a magnificent presentation of the Bach chorale. As the church bells ring out, one can almost hear the great masters presiding at the organ.

Outback This work was commissioned by the "Österreichische Blasmusikjugend" (Austrian Brass Band Association - Young Musicians). The Aboriginal indigenous people of Australia are among the oldest surviving human cultures. The arrival of the Europeans marked their decline and endangered their existence. The many secrets the Aborigines hold served as inspiration for this work. Aboriginal SpiritOver many centuries, the Aboriginal people have cultivated a unique ability to live in harmony with the world around them. Maintaining the deli¬cate balance between their trinity - nature, man, and creation - is an important factor for bliss and happiness.Primeval Sound and Dreamtime The tens of thousands-year-old stories from the era called Dreamtime - the Aborigines’ creation myth - play an important role in not only their be¬liefs, but their everyday lives and laws as well. Ancestral worship and various other rituals and ceremonies are still held in high regard to this very day.Running HunterThe Aborigines are extremely skilful hunters and are able to run for extended periods of time when chasing their prey. Hunting weapons, such as the boomerang, exemplify their abilities.Uluru (Red Rock)Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a natural sandstone “inselberg” rising 348m above Australia’s plains, and is one of the country’s most recognisable icons. Uluru is also a sacred place for the local Aborigines. Its history stretches back to Dreamtime, although it did not exist in its current state at that time.Encounter with the White MenUnfortunately, the “White Men” did not realize the significance and importance of the Aborigines and their culture until the end of the 20th century. Before then, they were unaware that the Aborigines were quite possibly one of the oldest known cultures on earth, with a seamless history stretching back to creation itself; Dreamtime. BushfireFire has been present on the Australian continent for millions of years. Many of the indigenous flora and fauna have needed to adapt to fire, and evolution has led to unique solutions for survival. Over time, a complex symbiotic relationship has grown between life and the continually returning bushfire.

Austrian Overture Austria is an industrious country. During the last century—which was characterized by extreme changes—the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues in search of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there’s also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. But life never stands still: creativity, ambition, and work are the driving forces of our existence. Embracing this thought, a reprise of the first part provides a compelling ending.

REM-scapes Sweet echoes of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in the introduction bring a gentle slumber. Breathing is calm and sleep holds the promise of rest and relaxation.
With the onset of the REM sleep phase, however, in which most dreams take place and where the day’s events are worked through, we hear other sounds played.
With distorted sounds, reminiscent of an old gramophone, the music pulls the listener inevitably ever deeper into the dreamscape, in a very realistic dangerous situation that comes to a dramatic head. It triggers a desperate struggle between the impulse to awaken and the exhausting urge to flee. For a short moment, it seems as if the wakeful urge has won out, before dream’s powerful spell is again cast, and there’s no escape…
