OTTO M. SCHWARZ

Introduce yourself:

I am an Austrian composer and musician. I studied the concert discipline Trumpet as well as Musical Education at the Conservatory in Vienna. I have composed for orchestra, concert band, and various other ensembles, as well as writing and producing more than 2500 titles for TV, cinema, media and advertising.

What inspired you to start composing?

I started to write easy pieces by the age of ten. Later I switched to pop music and then moved on to the concert music segment. I actually like many musical styles, which I often let flow into each other.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

Life, and everything associated with it, is inspiration. I am referred to as the “story teller among the wind music composers”. That really says it all.

Your top 5 symphonic works

There are too many great works to name five. I am mostly enthusiastic about instrumentations and sounds. Works, that have played a significant role in my life without fitting into any evaluation, are:

Star Wars – John Williams“

In the Stone – Earth Wind & Fire

The Turn of a Friendly Card – Alan Parsons Project

Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major, mvt. 1 – Joseph Haydn

… the list could be continued at length.

What is your next project?

Luckily, there are a lot commissions lying ahead of me in the coming years. Also, there are constant requests from the media and TV world and inquiries for workshops from all over world. However, my next project is to become 50 and not look old 😏.

Jazz Waltz No. 1 Jazz Waltz No.1 takes it’s influence from the tradition of American big bands with their vibrant bold sound. Following a short introduction from the complete band both the trumpet and saxophone are given the chance to shine with jazz solos, all played along with a lilting 3/4 swinging accompaniment. Both musicians and audienceswill love this spectacular work for concert band.

Funk Attack Otto M. Schwarz is endeavoring to contribute new ideas to concert band literature. He has contributed in the field of multimedia (Asteroid), and with his many compositions in symphonic/modern arrangement (Jazz Waltz No 1, Fire and Ice or Band Fever). His new composition Funk Attack is, as the name suggests, a piece in funk style. Otto M. Schwarz first gained his experience in his style in the 8o?s, transcribing numbers by famos Amerarican bands including "Earth, Wind and Fire", "Tower of Power"", and the British slap idol "Mark King" (Level 42). Funk attack is atypical of "the concert band scene" and requires absolute precision in phrasing and rhythm. Without the support of a great percussion groove, the orchestra plays an interlocked theme in the central section in style of recent American Big Bands. Otto M. Schwarz dedicated this work to "Alexander Veit and Symphonic Winds".

See You! See You! is a little farewell song. Farewell scenes are a prominent part of the most touching elements of film music. Just think of the soundtrack to the great film Casablanca, which became famous overnight. "See You!" is not intended to be a permanent good-bye but more a ‘see you soon’. It has been especially composed for young bands or smaller ensembles who want to try a more modern style of band music.

Man in the Ice On September 19th, 1991 a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Ötztäler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5,300 years, with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and today allow us a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mündel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film which, based on facts, shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the “Man in the Ice.”

Asteroid Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid and immediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth....

It tells the tale of two brothers who differed greatly, one was handsome and the other a huntchback. He was given a last minute reprise when he told of a spring that would end the local drought. An epic tale of love and revenge!

Up in the Sky One of man’s great dreams has always been to fly high through the air like a bird, free as a bird. There are ancient Greek legends such of those of Daedalus and Icarus, and indeed as early as the 9th century attempts at flight are reputed to have taken place in Arabia. It wasn’t until 1783, however, that the invention of hot air ballooning by the Montgolfier brothers in France propelled man through the air for the first time. This colourful work depicts every step of this adventurous ballooning story.

Stratosphere What do the American Joseph Kittinger and the Austrian Felix Baumgartner have in common? They both jumped from over 30km high with a parachute. While Kittinger’s attempt on 16 August 1960 was from a height of ‘only’ 31,333 meters, Felix Baumgartner broke this record on 14 October 2012 with a breath-taking 38,969 meters.

This composition Stratosphere describes the adventure, from climbing into the capsule with help of a balloon, to the short pause in the stratosphere, and the jump, the turbulence during the free-fall descent, and finally the opening of the parachute and the safe landing.

He lived at the time of the Inquisition and his predictions and medical therapies as a physician caused him to face the wrath of the church forcing him to flee many times. Following the loss of his family to the plague he devoted himself to clairvoyancy. Whether he is denounced as a charlatan or promoted as a myth he has surely moved humankind with his prophecies.Otto M.
