GERALD OSWALD

Introduce yourself:

I was born in Groß St. Florian (Austria) in 1968. I completed my studies in Trumpet, Conducting and Composition as well as various workshops with Franz Cibulka, Thomas Doss, Jan Van der Roost a. o. Today I’m a teacher for Brass instruments and Band Conducting at the Erzherzog Johann Conservatory in Stainz, as well as a teacher for Conducting at the J.J. Fux music school in Graz. In 2010 my work Variations on an Austrian Folk Song was awarded at the Austrian Composition Competition. Since 2011 I’ve been working with Mitropa Music (Hal Leonard MGB).

What inspired you to start composing?

I did my first steps towards composing only at the age of 34. In 2002 I attended the class for Concert Band Conducting with Franz Cibuka at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory. He stimulated and motivated me to compose. At this time I wrote my first compositions.

What is your biggest source of inspiration?

I mostly find the topics for my compositon in my environment. My two children (three and eight years old) inspire me to the youth band compositions. Knights, Red Indians and the fire brigade are always a theme at home. For commissioned compositions the topics are mostly determined by the commissioner. Furthermore I’m interested in many musical styles and thus constantly get inspiration for my compositions.

Your top 5 symphonic works

Richard Strauss – An Alpine Symphony

Gustav Mahler – Symphony No. 1

Anton Bruckner – Symphony No. 7

Ludwig van Beethoven – Symphony No. 3

Johann Sebastian Bach – Brandenburg Concerto No. 3

What is your next project?

My next project will be a commissioned work about the Roman City of Flavia Solva. The excavation site of this city is near to my home. The music describes the live of people in this city, it’s destruction by the Teutons, and it’s reconstruction.

La Canzone della Fantasia The chorale La Canzone della Fantasia is suitable for every wind band, thanks to its careful instrumentation. It is especially suitable as an exercise for your orchestra. Above all this piece serves as an ideal point of rest in any concert programme, allowing your audience to forget the hectic nature of everyday life.

After hearing the majestic introduction, a knight is seen riding towards the castle on his way to court the lovely princess residing there. The old ghost inhabiting the castle watches this romance blossom with great sadness. Only the castle and its ghost know how this story will end. Andante & Rondo Antonio Capuzzi (August 1, 1755 - March 28, 1818) was an Italian violinist and composer who studied violin with Nazari and composition with Bertoni. In 1805 he moved to Bergamo, where he was professor of violin at the Instituto Musicale and leader of the orchestra at Teatro Riccardi. He was highly regarded there both as a teacher and a performer. Although popular in his day, most of his music is now forgotten; his most commonly performed piece today is the Concerto for Double Bass. All of Capuzzi’s known compositions were written during his Venetian years. It was in Venice that Capuzzi became close friends with Domenico Dragonetti, Beethoven‘s virtuoso bassist. It is speculated that Capuzzi wrote his Concerto for Double Bass for Dragonetti. Gerald Oswald has made a fine arrangement of the second (Andante) and third (Rondo) movements of the concerto to feature either euphonium or tuba with concert band. The solo part is also available in an edition with piano accompaniment.

Variations on an Austrian Folksong Hot off the press! Composer Gerald Oswald bases this new work on an old Austrian folksong, O du lieber Augustin! The Augustin in questions is a ballad singer and an ad lib poet who apparently wrote this folksong about himself. His grim sense of humour and his attitude towards life, that humour can get you through anything, are readily apparent in this new piece. Gerald Oswald’s Variations on an Austrian Folk Song received top honours at the 2010 Austrian Composition Contest.
