• Introduce yourself:

I am a French composer, conductor and percussionist. I studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. I mostly compose for concert band and brass band. In 2016 4barsrest awarded me “Newcomer of the year” as well as the prize for the “Test Piece of the Year”.

• What inspired you to start composing?

I started making arrangements for trios and quartets at a very young age. Playing in several concert bands from the age of seven onwards inspired me to start composing. At the age of 14 I started writing my first composition for orchestra.

• What is your biggest source of inspiration?
My biggest source of inspiration is History. It is my passion. I’ve already used many historic themes in my works, for example Napoléon Bonaparte (Emperor), the Charcoal mines (Fraternity), and the First World War 1914-1918 (Fields of Honour).

• Your top 5 symphonic works?

3rd Symphony (G. Mahler)
Requiem (W. A. Mozart)
Adventure on Earth (J. Williams)
Concerto en Sol (or Concerto in G) (M. Ravel)
Pictures at an Exhibition (Mussorgsky/Ravel)

• What is your next project?

My upcoming projects are new works for concert band and brass band that will soon be published by de Haske as well as some other commissioned works. I’ve also received several commissions for larger works for choir, concert band and actors.

Emperor With Emperor, French composer Thierry Deleruyelle wanted to create a descriptive musical work depicting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The first movement represents the idiosyncrasies of this famous personality as well as his dramatic mood swings. The second movement is dedicated to his great love, Josephine Beauharnais. A contrasting third movement depicts Napoleon the fearless general and the countless battles he waged. A truly powerful work about one of histories truly powerful men.

Colors of Time Gazing into life is like gazing at the colours of passing time. Sometimes cool and mysterious, sometimes opalescent, warm or luminous, the colours of time, like life itself, are ever-changing. When colour materialises, it becomes music. With delicate and powerful moods, brilliant and intimate textures, and joyful and nostalgic sounds, music seeps into our memory like stories drawn from many individual real-life experiences.

High Voltage High Voltage is an especially energetic composition in the big band style. The blaring brass and the ornate interplay of the woodwinds lend this work great character and conviction. In the second half of the piece two solos are played: firstly the tenor saxophone (alternatively alto saxophone), followed by a virtuoso variation in the trombone (alternatively baritone euphonium).

Atlantic Overture Atlantic Overture is a sparkling piece symbolising a journey by ship from Europe to the Americas. The music tells the story of a ship leaving the European coast on a journey that depicts the beauty of the open sea and the sunlight on the horizon. Finally, the main theme returns in a brilliant ending that heralds the arrival in America.

Statue of Liberty A brief introduction leads to a majestic theme in the clarinets, supported by pounding percussion beats, before the brass section takes up the theme in a quicker, heroic fashion. In Statue of Liberty the French composer Thierry Deleruyelle depicts the grandeur and sheer scale of the statue, which was created in his homeland as a gift to the United States.

Atlas Symphony The Atlas Symphony for symphonic wind band is an impressive and subtle work, thematically complex, with a rich orchestration, but also great beauty. The composer was keen to draw a parallel between an atlas, where all the geographical maps of the world are collected in one book, and his score, which brings together all the facets of his musical style. Despite being written without any breaks, the symphony is structured around three main ideas. It is based upon a series of notes that will become the very essence of the piece, its building blocks. Like the works of composers of serial music, the series appears in different forms - melodic and harmonic, thematic or simply as an accompaniment. With its wealth of rhythms and contrapuntal power, this piece is a compelling concerto for orchestra. The Orchestre de la Police Nationale was the first to be attracted to this work and premiered it with excellence under the baton of composer Thierry Deleruyelle.

Fraternity This piece by Thierry Deleruyelle is based on one of the most significant events in the history of coal mining; the catastrophe at Courrières, Northern France. It took place on 10th March 1906 and is considered the most momentous mining accident in Europe and the second most significant in the world. This work is both emotional and spectacular and tells in 7 contrasting sections the catastrophe that occurred. Fraternity was the test piece in the “Champion” category at the European Brass Band Competition 2016 in Lille, thus commemorating 110 years since the disaster at Courrières.

The Heaven Tree The Heaven Tree is based on the fi rst book in an intensely imagined trilogy by author Edith Pargeter. Set during the golden age of cathedral building, this adventure novel explores the splendour and cruelty of the Middle Ages. Thierry Deleruyelle’s work is an ideal accompaniment to the novel. With an obvious sense of suspense, his music helps us get in touch with a distant reality that brings the past to life.

Sahara Sahara takes you on a journey to the largest desert in the world. Located in the north of the African continent, it covers eight million square kilometres and spreads across ten nations. The work describes the various landscapes that the Sahara has to offer, using different instrumental groups to underline different characteristics. Both an intense rhythmic passage with lots of percussion, as well as a chorale part with beautiful brass segments, make this a wonderful yet challenging piece. It also allows you to work on different technical aspects with your band and is suitable for a concert or a contest.

Children's Oak Children’s Oak was commissioned by the wind band from Beauquesne, France. This solemn work pays homage to a city particularly affected by the two World Wars and is inspired by the knowledge that the city of Beauquesne needed to recover from these terrible episodes in its history. The title has its origin in the roots of the word “Beauquesne”, the beautiful oak tree. It is a beautiful slow piece for your concert, or as a resource to work on phrasing and intonation, or alternatively as a warm up piece.
