• Introduce yourself:

I was born in Friesland in 1951. I studied music at the Music Pedagogical Academy in Leeuwarden and at the Conservatory of Utrecht. I have already worked in the music business for over 50 years, both as a conductor and composer. I was also the founder of De Haske Publications.

• What inspired you to start composing?

By the age of 10, I decided to opt for a career in music. I started playing a wind instrument and later on I tried pretty quickly to compose my first monophonic melodies. In preparation for my studies at the conservatory I got aquainted with harmonics and learned to play the piano. This is the moment composing music became something that never left me.

• What is your biggest source of inspiration?

You can be inspired in different ways. For example, by a concert that you attended, by an interesting existing melody or motif, by nature, by a specific event or a subject that is being offered by a client.

• Your top 5 symphonic works?

This question is impossible to answer. Beautiful compositions have been produced throughout the history of music in all styles.

• What is your next project?

A composition assignment of a 3rd division fanfare. This should be a concert work of about 11 minutes.

Tochter Zion Tochter Zion, also known as See the Conquering Hero Comes, is the most famous chorus from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus (1746) by the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). The heroic epic based on the Biblical story about commander-in-chief Judas Maccabaeus, was used by Handel to celebrate the English victory over the rebellious Scottish. The first performance of this patriotic work - written in the pleasing, rich baroque style that Handel’s music is known for - was conducted by himself; the success was huge. The chorus See the Conquering Hero Comes was added later, in 1748, drawn from another oratorio (Joshua).

Overture to a New Age A new era dawns-heralded by solemn brass fanfares. What does the future hold? In his work Overture to a New Age, Jan de Haan expresses on the one hand anticipation, on the other also an awareness that things won’t always be as rosy as they sometimes appear. Ultimately, however, confidence and hope win through, represented by Jan de Haan in a brilliant coda. The new age can begin!

Inspiration This substantial work by Jan de Haan explores the many tonal qualities of the brass band. Following a quiet opening theme based on Phrygian tonality the band bursts into life with a massive climax. Following a jolly second theme characterised by large interval jumps peace and quiet is again restored. Both themes are developed with many poignant solo figures until we reach a resounding fortissimo climax with the solo cornet performing the first theme from the back of the auditorium. A spectacular concert work containing all the elements that bring out the best in brass band sound.

Te Deum Großer Gott, wir loben dich is a well-known German hymn, written by Ignaz Franz in the 18th century but based on the 4th century Te Deum laudamus. After a radiant introduction by the brass section, the first variation on the chorale appears. Subsequently, the song is rendered in its original form. Then three more variations follow. The result is a solemn work that is very fitting within the context of a church service, but is also suitable for many other occasions.

Consolation Wer nur den lieben Gott lässt walten was composed by Georg Neumark in about 1641 and was subtitled ‘Trostlied’ literally meaning consolation song. Songbooks at the time showed the popularity of this song and it is still well-known today partly due to Johann Sebastian Bach’s use of the melody for one of his own chorals. In Jan de Haan’s arrangement the choral is heard twice, once, alternating with the original motif from the introduction and a second time, without interruption, reflecting the composer’s original intention - a song of consolation.

Chorale and Canzone The words and lyrics of the Christmas Carol From Highest Heaven I Come To Tell were written by the great Martin Luther (1483-1546) and can be found in The Hymns of Martin Luther. Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther, the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535. Add a majestic Baroque feel to any concert with this simple yet effective arrangement.

Cityscapes For Cityscapes, the composer used the metropolis of New York, the largest city of the United States, as a source of inspiration. The first movement mirrors the skyline of the ‘Big Apple’. In movement two, Central Park is introduced and in the closing movement of this triptych, the ever-sparkling Manhattan, known for its many skyscrapers, and its financial centre Wall Street, is the focal point. Not only are the busy city traffic and the chaotic hustle and bustle expressed in the music, but also the impressive buildings, including the famous Empire State Building. Flashback A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. Musica Helvetica Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. The final part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.
