• Introduce yourself:

I studied music theory, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, composition, piano and organ in Leuven (Lemmens Institute) and Antwerp (Conservatory). Up until two years ago, I was a professor in both schools, now I'm retired. For many years I was a conductor of three concert bands, currently I'm only active in the world of wind music as a jury member, recording engineer and composer.

• What inspired you to start composing?

My first piano teacher Liliane Herchuelz, urged me as a child to write down the improvisations I made on the piano (which I loved playing more than the studies of Czerny). Later, my teacher Frans Geysen, Matthy Niël and Willem Kersters have continued to encourage me. I discovered the Wind Band world only later on, by a composition competition of the Campine Youth Fanfare Orchestra. Ever since then, I keep writing windmusic, inspired by the rising level of many amateur orchestras at that time (the 80s of the last century).

• What is your biggest source of inspiration?

It’s hard to say, there are many things that inspire me. That can be a nice chord sequence, a beautiful city, a beautiful landscape, a beautiful girl, whatever. But also a historical fact, funny or sad, can get me going.

• Your top 5 symphonic works?

My top 5 of the last months:

"Concerto for Orchestra" by Bela Bartok

Symphony "Mathis der Maler" by Paul Hindemith

"Sinfonietta" by Leos Janacek

"Enigma Variations" by Edward Elgar

Prelude to "Parsifal" by Richard Wagner

but that list may be different next year …

• What is your next project?

Recovering from a back surgery, writing a beautiful choral work, and finally compose a work for big band.

A Flemish Christmas In A Flemish Christmas, Jan Hadermann tells the Christmas story by means of four Old Flemish Christmas Songs.Mary is chosen to bring Jesus Christ, the son of God, into the world: Het was een maged uitverkoren (‘She was a virgin chosen’).On the occasion of a census, Mary, who is with child, and Joseph, her husband to be, travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus will be born in a humble stable: Maria die zoude naar Bethlehem gaan (Mary would go to Bethlehem’).O kerstnacht, schoner dan de dagen (‘Oh Christmas Night, more beautiful than the days’) is a stately chorale that sings the praises of Jesus’ birth.Three wise men from the East, Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, follow a bright star in the sky, which leads them to Bethlehem. There, they worship the newborn King, and offer him gold, frankincense and myrrh: Wij komen van Oosten (We’ve come from the East’).This musical Christmas story ends with a festive repeat of the third movement, the stately chorale.

Guernica Guernica, a peaceful town in the Basque region of Spain, was reduced to ruins on the 26th of April 1937 by Nazi bombers. It was a totally unexpected attack that happened while the crowded open-air market was in progress. Over 1600 innocent citizens were killed. This was one of the most senseless and abhorrent war crimes in history. In this new work by Jan Hadermann the music of the Basque region can clearly be heard, with street musicians adding lustre to the open-air market with dance music. Spring is in the air when suddenly from behind the mountaintops, the death squad appears and all hell breaks loose. The work ends with an intense plea to never let anything like this happen again. A moving and contemplative new work for concert band.

Twins Twins is a composition about two children, born at the same moment, growing up together yet with totally different characters. One twin is sensitive and introverted whilst the other is much more lively and energetic. This is reflected in the musical motifs of the piece. The quiet first melody which gains tension through continuous transposition is succeeded by the joyous rocking melody of the second twin.

Ritual Ritual, a work for large concert band, describes the atmosphere during a pagan ceremonial offering. The tension of the approaching ritual, softly supported by a mysterious percussion accompaniment, slowly builds and leads to an enticing dance. This precedes the height of the ritual, the pagan sacrifice. Following the sacrifice the peace seems to be restored until suddenly a surprising final turn ends Ritual.

Refraction Refraction is a work that uses the entire band and all the colours it can possibly produce. As the title suggests, it was inspired the fascinating physical phenomenon known as refraction. Just like light is split and disbursed into all its colours, the main theme is split into little motives. As the individual motives are disbursed throughout the band, different sections become more prominent, only to recede into the general texture again. The work concludes with the fusion of all these elements in a monumental climax of movement, sound and colour.
