Description
The Concertino for trumpet and organ was written in 1962 for and dedicated to Jean-Pierre Mathez, who played the premiere of it June 28, 1962 at the Collégiale Church in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, with the composer at the organ. Also in the same year the version with orchestra accompaniment was premiered with the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra conducted by Victor Desarzens. The beginning Allegro vivace, built around two themes of opposing character, one rhythmic, one melodic, is constructed in sonata form. The second movement (Poco lento) also includes two themes which develop in opposition, combine, and conclude diminuendo. The Concertino finishes with a classical fugue (Allegro), stated and developed with brio, until the counterexposition where a chorale (whose two phrases are in mirror images of each other) is superimposed.
